When It’s Time To See A Physical Therapist

People know when it’s time to see a doctor or dentist but many are unsure of when it’s time to book an appointment with a physical therapist. The goal of PT is to improve a person’s ability to move, reduce pain, recover from injury, manage chronic pain and/or prevent disability. There are numerous benefits to physical therapy.

A Personalized Treatment Plan

Good physical therapists will be able to modify your treatment plan as you go through the rehabilitation process. When you start your rehabilitation journey with a PT, they will likely indicate to you a plan for a course of action for treatment. Ideally, this protocol brings results and you can follow it. A good PT will ask questions each visit to modify your treatment plan if needed.

Avoid Drugs & Surgery

Physical therapy can treat chronic conditions. Many health care providers over prescribe surgery and pills to treat conditions that can more effectively be treated with physical therapy. That’s because physical therapy deals with the root of a condition instead of the symptoms.

Long Term Results

While many injuries do take some time to heal and allow for full range of motion, you should still see progress while on the plan. This is especially true with acute injuries, where you should be able to see a reduction in inflammation, for example, within the first week. Injuries such as tendinopathies or more chronic progressions may take longer.

Many wrongly assume that in order to see a physical therapist, you first need a doctor’s referral. However, the state of New York has “Direct Access” to Physical Therapy, which means that you are not legally required to have a Physician’s referral before seeing a Physical Therapist for an evaluation or treatment. Check with your insurance provider to see if a referral is required for payment.
